Editorial Reviews

Baltimore Sun
The largest collaborative photography project in U.S. history
NPR, All Things Considered
One thousand professional photographers fanned out across the nation to document a full week in the life of America. And this time around, amateur photographers were able to submit their own digital photos for consideration.
San Francisco Chronicle
Not since Roy Stryker, who ran an unparalleled photography project through the Farm Security Administration from 1935 until 1942, has America seen itself documented so thoroughly.
The New York Times
Mr. Smolan and Mr. Cohen, who are perhaps best known for creating the Day in the Life series of photography books in the 1980s, have come up with an ambitious 21st-century version called America 24/7.
USA Today
America 24/7 is an ambitious effort to document in photos the way we live our lives.
Publishers Weekly
From the team that created A Day in the Life of America ("the bestselling photography book ever published," claims the publisher) comes the first of a 53-volume project documenting a week in the life of the United States. This volume, which features 263 full-color shots, distills the other 52 books-one for each state, plus a volume each for Washington, D.C., and New York City-which are to be published together, on the same day, in September 2004. The project, shot between May 12 and May 18, 2003, involved more than 25,000 amateur and professional photographers, who took more than 1,000,000 photographs. Four-city author tour. (Nov.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Library Journal
For this sumptuous book, 25,000 photographers, including over 1000 assigned professionals and 36 Pulitzer Prize winners, headed forth to capture the everyday life of America over the course of a single week (May 12-18, 2003). All of the one million photographs were taken digitally and then quickly edited down to 1100 spectacular, often extraordinary photographs and published in this substantial and impressive book. Far exceeding the authors' popular "Day in the Life" series, America 24/7 tenderly evokes the beauty, truth, and strength of Americans at work, play, and worship, from "sea to shining sea" and from the Deep South to the Dakotas. A blend of grandeur and intimacy pervades the photographs, yet there is nothing staged. This authenticity is clearly the greatest strength of the book. Reminiscent of the best photo essays in Life magazine and Edward Steichen's 1955 exhibition and book, "The Family of Man," this is being heavily marketed on TV and in bookstores, and will, therefore, be much in demand. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries.-Raymond Bial, Firsts Light Photography Urbana, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
Adult/High School-More than 25,000 professional and amateur photographers were asked to capture the essence of life in their communities and tell their stories through the lens of a camera. Digital photography was chosen for the project because 2003 was the first year that Americans purchased more digital cameras than film cameras. The result is this collection of color images of everyday life in all its joys and sorrows. Essays by Charles Johnson, Robert Olen Butler, and Barbara Kingsolver, among others, introduce the divisions, such as "Sea to Shining Sea," and set the tone for what follows. It is a joy to see the common threads in the photographs no matter where, no matter whom. There is much to be savored, examined, and remembered in this extraordinary collection.-Peggy Bercher, Fairfax County Public Library, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

This is the most personalised gift to give someone!

The pictures are wonderful, but to be able to put a memory onto the cover of a coffee table book for all to see is just so amazing ... it never ceases to amaze people ... they always ask where it came from, how is it done, how can they get it etc ... a great gift for anyone! It is so easy to download the picture and to set it up on the website, and they even tell you if the picture is not up to the standard they need. It is a great gift!

fabulous book, and really cool custom covers!

The book has beautiful photographs and wonderful captions full of miniature stories. I ordered a cover, and when I had trouble with uploading (I¿m not very computer literate) their customer service team got back to me in a day and they helped me through it -- even resizing my picture for me. My custom cover order came in three weeks. I have to say it was really worth the effort seeing the final cover in my hands. I¿m surprised they don¿t charge us more for the whole thing. I¿ve ordered many more as gifts. Their new site is easier to use and I was even able to track my order using the USPS tracking number they gave me. I would expect any company trying out a whole new idea to take a few months to get such a large operation together, but now its June and the site seems so be working great! I would give it another chance if you had problems in the past. I¿m a satisfied customer and I know they¿re really trying their best.

Excellent pictoral of American life, and AWESOME custom cover!!

By coincidence, received my book and custom cover on the same day, and am THRILLED with both. Photos in book show all sorts of different aspects of American life; the custom cover (with picture of my 4-year-old daughter) is sharp, clear, glossy--just as nice as the original cover. VERY happy with this heirloom-quality purchase!!

    A Worthwhile Keepsake!

The book is a most special keepsake of a week in America. But the best part is the Custom Cover. I ordered two, one as a gift for a friend who had just lost her beloved 15-year old dog. I did a cover with a picture her beautiful dog. I was amazed at the quality of the covers. Needless to say, it is a gift that she will treasure for many years! A truly amazing present for friends and family!

    A Gem ...

I came across this book accidentally and could not take my eyes of it ! This collection of journalistic snapshots reminded me of the work of my favorite photographer Margaret Burke-White. What great choices of pictures, thoughtful and unpretencious. I want it ...I am buying it right now!

    Disappointed

Mediocre book and poor custom cover. The book had average, ¿nice¿ photos, but I was most dissatisfied with the custom cover. The proof looked great and the confirmation page indicated it would be ¿High¿ quality (I am not sure what the other points on the scale are). My husband and I were truly disappointed. The photo on our custom cover was grainy and oddly colored; certainly not crisp and clear like the real cover or the proof. The caption on the inside cover even had typos as quotes and apostrophes were changed into peculiar symbols. Not worth the investment.

    Cool book

I was very pleased to see this book at this point in our history when so many people are worried about the direction of our country. America 24/7 portrays the nation in a poignant yet realistic light. It is a very workable mix of grit and good old Americana. It is refreshing to see such an upbeat visual portrayal of our basic core values... essentially what it means to be an American citizen in 2003. I was first acquainted with this project through an outdoor art exhibit at Bryant Park in Manhattan. The exhibit was good. The book is better. Exquisitely printed and a bargain at Barnes & Noble's price.

    Excellent Book

It was nice to see so many pictures of folks around the country. It made me actually feel closer to people in general. Could you imagine what this country would be like if we all had an opportunity to look at each other in this way? The photos are amazing and this is a MUST buy!

You must have an open mind......

You must have an open mind when viewing this book.It is a great collection of photo's taken throughout America. Each photo is left for your own interpretation. I think each photo captures parts of America that we cannot see at all times. Whether it shows an accurate picture of America, that is debatable. It all depends on your personal viewpoint. The quality of this book is outstanding. I recommend it.

    a day in the life....

pictures were beautiful but left one wondering what happened to the america theme? what about 911 and maybe before and after I hoped to see this type of rendering rather than random, unrelated, photos that were directed where???

    Real people - no hype

This book is physically impressive. Then when you open it up and flip through the pages, you discover an America that doesn't ordinarily show up in the popular media screen. Jus ordinary people and places captured very well. The pictures have a lot of impact and the captions tell some truly lovely little stories.

    What it is...

The authors took a week in May - added over 10,000 professional photographers and nearly 100,000 student and amature camera bugs - and let them loose to shoot. What a great look into America during a random week. This book gives views never possible up to now. A digital review of what people saw all across the country at all times of the day. What a national treasure. This will be a heirloom in the not too distant future

    America 24/7

I have 'A Day in the Life of America' - and was very excited about this project when I saw it on OPRAH. The book is wonderful - the photos are interesting slices and stories of Americana. I think its a timeless album capturing a fascinating point in our history. Also - I ordered 4 custom covers which is so, so cool.

Very cool photographic quilt of the US.

This is a very cool overview of the US and the people who live in it right now. The pictures are printed in amazing color, its hefty but for me that just meant a deeper and more intriguing book to enjoy.
