Editorial Reviews

VOYA
First seen as a webcomic, 150 strips of America Jr. are now available in book form. The chapter for Millerstown, population 3,900, has just expired, and the town is no longer part of the United States. The residents need to come up with their own rules for this new country. The mayor becomes the interim president and then runs for president as a Remocrat against Jimmy, a youth in town, who points out that there is no minimum age to run. A cast of characters in the mayor's office create subplots of romance and helps to ensure that authority remains chaotic as opinions on every issue, including immigration, are shared constantly. Although a bit predictable in forming a new country, choosing a song, establishing committees, and renaming the local high school, the satire will amuse most readers. The light humor surrounds many topics for discussion that would engage readers in thinking about what they would do to lead a country, what the pros and cons are for not being part of the U.S., and why people do things such as celebrate some holidays that might not make sense anymore. Black-and-white images in comic strip form tell the story of America Jr. This great read for mature readers will spark discussion in school libraries about government, especially with the upcoming election.
