Twenty-six previously unpublished papers discuss the origins, applications, and derivative forms of names like "America," "The States," "United States," "The Continent," "Yankee," and "New York." Similar issues are considered for the names of other places around the country, and the people who live there. Read was a scholar of English, linguistics, lexicography, folklore, and history, affiliated with Columbia University.
