America Needs A Buddhist President is truly inspirational! Eben Dodd's elegant and zen-like line drawings for each stanza bring home the simple but profound wisdom of Brett Bevell's prophetic poem. The message of Bevell's poem is clear, and not so new. One can relate it to Plato's idea of the philosopher king, set in a more democratic system with a leader who has the the advantage of spiritual insight, as Bevell writes: 'an egoless President to renounce the shames of Vietnam and Persian Gulf' and 'a childlike President, whose eyes still know that the borders on maps are imaginary.' Without making direct attacks on the present or any previous administration, Bevell alludes to a higher political agenda than one motivated by polls, advisors, or technocrats, one in which the President reads Zen koans and understands the mysteries of life that are much deeper than stock market trends or fashionable sound-bites. No matter what party or religion one identifies with, America Needs A Buddhist President has a vision that perhaps could help heal America if enough voters ask for such qualities in their leaders. We can only hope.
