Overview

"In this controversial analysis of the American tradition, Anatol Lieven contends that U.S. foreign policy since 9/11 has been shaped by the special character of our nationalism. This is split between an optimistic, even messianic civic nationalism based on "American Creed," and a resentful chauvinism derived from old traditions of racial, religious, and class anxiety within America." Lieven examines how these impulses have played out in recent U.S. policies, especially in the Middle East. He suggests that in this region, the uneasy combination of policies based on two contradictory traditions have gravely undermined U.S. credibility and complicated the war against terrorism.
