Editorial Reviews

VOYA, June 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 2) - Mary Ellen Snodgrass
A useful reference to a neglected area, the Eye on Art series expands the definition of creativity to include public monuments, residential architecture, craft furnishings, and Walt Disney’s movies and parks. Loonin’s Public Art promotes urban murals, memorial landscaping, green space decor, the AIDS quilt, and eco-sculpture that invite daily perusal by all levels of society, including children and the disabled. She glosses essential definitions of pop art and site-specific works that explain and assess historical or environmentally rich sites. Sheen’s The American Arts And Crafts Movement broaches a more obscure area of folk creativity that lumps together high-rise urban architecture with mission-style housing, tile, stained glass, and pottery shaped in art therapy classes. The text introduces settlement house philosophy alongside utopian communes and craft guilds, a union of artisans that organizes individual workshops into a business. Sheen’s Walt Disney outlines the harnessing of an idiosyncratic imagination in one of America’s success stories. She explains how Disney, gifted with appreciation for sketching and film, channeled unusual pairings into classics, such as Tchaikovsky’s waltzes into background for the film “Fantasia.” A glossary explains animated cels and live action, two views that Disney overlayered in “Song of the South.” A mixed bag of art books, the series offers young readers possible outlets for their own dreams and projects. (Eye on Art) Reviewer: Mary Ellen Snodgrass; Ages 11 to 14.
