Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rachelle Bilz
New technologies for information and learning have necessitated changing basic guidelines for school library media programs over the years. Based on the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, this resource presents the latest guidelines and standards for school libraries. Clearly written and cogently presented, this book begins with the 2009 revised mission statement of the school library media program (SLMP) and then delineates twenty-first-century skills, learners, and learning environments. Subsequent chapters tackle the myriad facets of the SLMP, from the roles of educators to learning environments and the collection. Following each guideline is a list of specific actions suggested for the school library media specialist (SLMS). Helpful sidebars such as "Factors to Consider When Building the Virtual Collection" and "Examples of Alternative Funding Sources" enrich the information in each chapter. The "Delve Deeper" lists found on almost every page refer the reader to a plethora of excellent resources, both print and online. Ten pages of appendixes contain helpful information such as the Library Bill of Rights. Indispensable for any media specialist, this AASL resource provides both a blueprint for SLMP excellence and a valuable tool to highlight the importance of the SLMS as an integral part of the educational team. It makes essential additions and revisions to SLMP standards for twenty-first-century learners, thus arming the SLMS with information essential to maintaining the highest standards of service to school patrons.
