Barnes & Noble - Moira McCormick
Civilized alt-rock alternates with vintage rock and pop hits on this schizy-but-satisfying musical companion to one of the year's most acclaimed films, which itself explores the middle-aged crazies. In the former category, bard of the cinema Elliott Smith his "Miss Misery" from GOOD WILL HUNTING was nominated for an Oscar croons a sweetly falsetto-laced version of the Beatles' "Because"; Sebadoh spinoff Folk Implosion offers up the harmonious, little mid-tempo rocker "Free to Go"; Eels toss off "Cancer for the Cure," with its nicely tough, '60s-garage vibe; and the intriguingly hard-to-categorize, atmospheric, British blues-jam band Gomez is represented by one of its most mesmerizing cuts, "We Haven't Turned Around." Interspersed with these end-of-the-century airs are such classic-rock warhorses as Free's "All Right Now" and the Who's "The Seeker" also a central component of the recent soundtrack to THE LIMEY, not to mention Bill Withers's laconic "Use Me" and Bobby Darin's swingin' "Don't Rain on My Parade." Plus, there's sublime vocal jazz from Betty Carter the sensuous "Open the Door" and Peggy Lee an enchanted "Bali Ha'i," from SOUTH PACIFIC. AMERICAN BEAUTY is bookended by vivid-as-watercolors instrumental tracks from Thomas Newman, who composed the film's score.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The soundtrack to Sam Mendes' American Beauty features the opening and closing themes from Thomas Newman's score, as well as a mix of classic and cutting-edge rock, pop, and soul. Bobby Darin's "Don't Rain on My Parade," Betty Carter's "Open the Door," and Peggy Lee's "Bali Ha'i" add to the film's conventional, suburban setting, while Free's "All Right Now," the Who's "The Seeker," and the Folk Implosion's "Free to Go" suggest the turbulence lying just under the surface. The soundtrack also includes a previously unreleased version of the Beatles' "Because" by Elliot Smith.
