Reviewer: Emmaline Marie Rasmussen, BS in Dietetics Candidate-2012(UIC College of Applied Health Sciences)
Description: This comprehensive guide effectively conveys food and nutrition information, making it a useful resource for dispelling nutritional myths prevalent in both healthcare and among the general public.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide current information and guidelines relating to nutrition, physical activity, and general health and wellness, while addressing current trends and research in these areas. The author provides useful strategies for achieving and maintaining healthful eating habits, covering a broad spectrum of life cycle stages and disease states. She also extensively covers up-to-date research and trends, making it a reliable source to keep readers current.s.
Audience: The author gears the book towards the general public interested in overall healthy eating and wellness. However, with the references to complex health conditions and scientific concepts, the book is appropriate for presenting a wide range of nutrition topics in an introductory course at the college level. It also would be useful for providing healthcare professionals with an overview of relevant nutrition information.
Features: The first section covers general information, guidelines, and tips for living a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity, healthful food choices, and general wellness tips are discussed as are unhealthful behaviors and diets. The second section presents sound nutritional information, covering everything from basic macronutrients to micronutrients, fluid balance, etc. In the following section, previously introduced concepts are applied to initiate a user-friendly dialogue surrounding nutrition and health. The remaining sections present more specific guidelines for populations that may have special or individualized nutritional needs. Recommendations for different life stages and disease conditions are included, along with food sensitivities and therapeutic diets. Supplements are mentioned, but more information relating to potential contraindications and/or medication interactions would be useful. Throughout the book, the author highlights key messages, providing "the bottom line" for readers. Interesting information relating to current trends or misconceptions is also flagged using "Have you ever wondered?" anecdotes.
Assessment: This is an important source of relevant information for students and healthcare professionals. It is an exceptionally user-friendly resource that provides general and individualized recommendations on health and nutrition. This edition provides up-to-date information, enabling readers to stay current in a constantly evolving field.

Library Journal
The American Dietetic Association, along with Duyff, noted food and nutrition consultant, have written a readable and timely book for the lay reader. Some of the topics discussed are the food pyramid, what to eat (and not eat) while taking prescription medicines, preparing your own baby food, nutritional needs of the elderly, eating ostrich meat, the iron content of foods when cooking in iron pots, and the calories in the glue of a postage stamp. Included is a lengthy resource list of associations/organizations that will provide more information. However, an index is not included, and olestra is only briefly mentioned. Duyff gives sound advice, making this a good addition to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Complete Book of Nutrition (St. Martin's, 1990). Recommended for public libraries.Connie Weaver, Bosler Free Lib., Carlisle, Pa.

This is a great book. It covers most everything related to healthy living. But unlike most of the stuff you are going to read on the Internet this is based on science. Don't waste time with fad diets and exercise plans. This will tell you what you need to know.
