American Druggist Complete Family Guide to Prescriptions, Pills and Drugs

by American Druggist, John J. Fried, Sharon Petska

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A combined Physician's Desk Reference and pharmacology textbook for consumers, this volume was compiled by the editors of American Druggist, a trade magazine for pharmacists. The first 13 chapters discuss many general drug-related issues, including classification, administration, medications for children, safeguards during pregnancy, considerations for the elderly, and drug dependency. The remaining chapters, which cover respective therapeutic categories, include a short introduction followed by tables for individual drugs. Both prescription and over-the-counter medications are included. Each chart includes the generic and proprietary names, dosage forms, adverse reactions, drug interactions, and other special precautions. A section with suggestions for stocking one's home medicine chest is very helpful, though a bibliography directing users to more specialized sources would have been useful. The book fulfills its goal of providing an up-to-date resource for lay readers. Recommended for reference collections in public libraries.-Bruce Slutsky, New Jersey Inst. of Technology Lib., Newark
