Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This up-to-date reference provides brief but thorough accounts of thirty-nine women who have served as first ladies to the presidents of the United States. Essays range in length from about four pages for Jane Pierce to seventeen pages for Eleanor Roosevelt. Each entry includes a portrait of the woman and a chronological account of her life, including information about her birth, parentage, childhood, education, engagement, marriage, children and family life, and other data that the contributors deem important. In addition, each essay attempts to relate how each first lady managed to tailor the position to suit her own personality and the way she became a helpmate, protector, confidante, hostess, interior decorator, fashion trendsetter, policymaker, or a combination of many various roles. Also mentioned are any firsts that can be attributed to the women during their time as first lady. Contributors, many of whom have written full-length biographies or other treatments of their subjects or the presidents to whom they were married, used primary source documents including personal papers, letters, and manuscripts in their research. Best suited for upper-level high school students with an interest in the subject or more advanced researchers, most articles presuppose an understanding of the political and socioeconomic climate during the time of the subject's husband's presidency. Each entry also includes a bibliographic essay outlining the location and availability of resources for the subject. Index. Illus. Photos. Appendix. 2001, Routledge, 468p. PLB $95. Ages 16 to Adult. Reviewer:Lois Parker-Hennion—VOYA, December 2001 (Vol. 24, No. 5)
Booknews
Intended to provide the general reading public, including students, with biographical essays on each of the women who were married to the president of the United States during his term of office, this volume has been updated to cover Laura Bush, although her tenure has barely begun. Written by historians, political scientists, reporters, and other scholars, each essay presents a chronological account of the first lady's life and an effort to assess her place in the development of the institution. Bibliographical essays outline where personal papers and other relevant manuscript sources may be found, and provide a selection of the first lady's own writings, articles and memoirs by family and friends, biographical studies of her and her husband, and relevant other materials. Intended for the general reading public as well as students. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
