In Paris he is introduced to Claire de Cintre', daughter of the ancient House of Bellegarde, and to Valentin, her charming young brother. His bid for Claire's hand receives an icy welcome from the heads of the family, an elder brother and their formidable mother, the old Marquise. Can they stomach his manners for the sake of his dollars? Out of this classic collision between the old world and the new, James weaves a fable of thwarted desire that shifts between comedy, tragedy, romance, and melodrama - a fable which in the later version printed here takes on some of the subtleties associated with his greatest novels.

Henry James's classic--written about 1875 and called the first truly international novel--was written about by Leon Edel: "Behind its melodrama and its simple romance is the history of man's dream of better worlds, travel to strange lands, and marriage to high and noble ladies." 10 cassettes.

    Outstanding!

It is the best book I have read yet. Our local PBS station has been playing the movie, 'The American', staring Matthew Modine and I must say he played the part perfectly. The movie does the book great justice. I haven't been able to buy the book anywhere, but since finding it at Barnes & Noble.com, I will be purchasing it soon! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery with their romance.
