Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In 1989, 20 or so professional herbalists met in Santa Cruz, California to create an American guild; this book is a result of that creation. The articles and essays by herbalists such as Jeanne Rose, Tierra, and James Green include historical perspectives, discussions of American herbs, and case studies of specific treatments. The latter can be quite technical and obviously intended for experienced practitioners. The mix of articles is uneven, but it provides an interesting look at many types of alternative treatment: traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Western herbal medicine, as well as Native American herbalism. Many articles are well documented using a variety of sources, and appendixes include information on the American Herbalist Guild and schools where training in herbalism is available, plus correspondence courses and suggested readings. American Herbalism is for specialized and larger public library health collections.-- Katharine Galloway Garstka, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.
