Library Journal
A senior staff member at the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance and author of other ABC-CLIO companions, Hombs provides a fresh look at the persistent problem of homelessness in America, reflecting renewed interest in finding solutions on both the federal and the state level. Consisting of both introductory and in-depth material, the text furnishes a chronology of history, facts, statistics, important events, and recent developments, plus profiles of prominent involved individuals and a directory of relevant organizations and government agencies. Also surveyed in this one-stop guide are court cases, legislation, and federal funding, related housing and health issues and policies, and comparable statistics for Western countries. The text is written in a clear, readable style, with 50 percent of the material new to this edition (the book last appeared in 1994). Other references, such as The Homeless Problem (Wilson, 1992), now dated, present informative essays from periodicals but lack the scope and variety of the data found here. Unique in gathering one volume disparate critical resources on all aspects of homelessness in the United States, this comprehensive guidebook is recommended for public and academic libraries.
