Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Detailed yet concise, this gardening manual covers everything a busy outdoor gardener (beginning or experienced) needs to know to plan and grow a thriving garden. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which covers garden planning, illustrating various garden styles, hardscape choices, and advice on designing the space. Also shown is the range of features often included in gardens, from sheds to ponds to patios. Part 2, which is arranged by plant type (lawns, trees, herbs, etc.), covers the care and maintenance of the plants and offers suggestions on which to grown. Part 3 offers thumbnail descriptions, including hardiness zones and the mature size of reliable, recommended plants arranged by the season they are at their best. The final part summarizes the routine but essential tasks the gardener should do each month. Beautiful, usefully captioned color photographs complement the accessible text, which includes easy-to-use instructions for projects and plant care. Throughout, readers are referred to pages that offer additional information on the topics discussed. While The American Horticulture Society Encyclopedia of Gardening (LJ 11/15/93) offers more comprehensive information on the same subjects, this manual would be a good choice for those libraries that do not own the encyclopedia. It would also be excellent for libraries needing additional general gardening guides for their circulating collections.--Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
