The 12 finalists from Season 4 of American Idol represent some of the best contestants in the popular talent show's three-year run. Highlights of The Showstoppers include Bo Bice's rockin' rendition of "I Don't Wanna Be," Carrie Underwood's country rendering of "Independence Day," and Vonzell Solomon's sassy and soulful "Best of My Love."

The American Idol cast album for season four arrived about a month later than it did for season two and season three. Instead of appearing during the thick of competition, as it did in 2003 and 2004, it was released the week before the final episode in May, when it was pretty clear that, barring some earth-shaking upset, either Carrie Underwood or Bo Bice was going to be our next "American Idol." Because of this, American Idol Season 4 winds up as a stroll down memory lane, or perhaps a chance to see if Lindsey Cardinale or Mikalah Gordon should have stuck around a little bit longer than they did. The album almost forces a listener to reminisce about the season past, because unlike the theme-based sets for seasons two and three, this is a collection of songs the 12 contestants performed on the show. While the Showstoppers subtitle suggests that this is the best of the best for each of the contestants, it's hard to believe that the lead-footed "Knock on Wood" was the best that Lindsey Cardinale had to offer that said, it did stop the show dead in its tracks. In any case, this is a good representation of what the show was all about in 2005, and listening to it, it's hard not to think that this was indeed the best batch of singers American Idol had ever had, as Randy Jackson proclaims every year of the show. In the past, many of the contestants were more impressive on TV than they were on record, sounding thin and faceless, but here, only a handful of the singers seem diminished in the recording studio. Among these is poor Cardinale, of course, who sounds as ill at ease as ever, and she's joined by Mikalah Gordon, who confirms that, at her best, she sounds like Fran Drescher singing torch songs. Good guy Anwar Robinson seems even more mannered on record than he did on the stage, and everybody's favorite Midwestern farm thug, Scott Savol -- we all better pray that there aren't a million of him walking around Ohio -- sounds thin and weak here, even though he's drowning in reverb. Vonzell Solomon, whose irrepressible bouncy spirit makes her an endearing presence on the show, is pleasant but forgettable here; the rest of the crew, however, do make a memorable impression on record. Nikko Smith is more forceful here than he was on the show, Anthony Fedorov has more charisma than Clay Aiken, Constantine Maroulis vamps up "My Funny Valentine" as effectively on record as he did on the show, while Jessica Sierra's powerful "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is so good, it's hard not to wish that she stayed around until the "final three." But even if she did, Bice's and Cardinale's contributions suggest that she wouldn't have stood a ghost of a chance against them. While Bo Bice was much, much better when singing the Allman Brothers on the show, his reading of Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be" is closer to what he'll wind up singing on his debut record, and he's every bit as memorable as DeGraw himself here. But it's Carrie Underwood who's the real shocker here. She'd always been good on the show, but at times she could seem a little mechanical in her delivery. Here, singing Martina McBride's "Independence Day," she sounds alive and engaged, and it makes for the best performance here, and a good indication that she could make a pretty good album. So, all in all, a pretty good season for American Idol, then. At the very least, it made for one of the better cast albums from the series.

American Idol Season 4: The Showstoppers

This is an awesome CD. Vonzell is the best, and should have gotten to the finals. I don't like Scott Savol's song, though. Otherwise, it is a good CD.

    woohoo american idol!

This is a wonderful cd with a good variety of songs. There are a few songs I don't like, such as Vonzell's "Best of my Love" and Lindsey Cardinale's "Knock on Wood," but the rest are awesome, especially Anthony and Constantine. After seeing the American Idol tour and waiting outside their tourbus for two hours and getting Anthony, Constantine and Carrie's autographs I just had to get this cd!

Great CD! Full of different types of music!!

I have to say this is a great cd. There aren't two performers that are alike. They all have their own style of singing. The songs that were picked were good choices for each of their voices. The ones I liked in particular were Anthony Fedorov's "Everytime You Go Away": His voice is so clear and powerful and pure. He does great on this song and shows true emotion. He is chill inducing as well. Jessica Sierra's rendition of "Total Eclipse Of the Heart" was moving and her voice is a beautiful instrument. It's like the song was made for her. The one other person that really stood out was Constantine Maroulis singing "My Funny Valentine" the arraingment is fabulous and has a cool jazz feel. Constantines vocals are great and really compliment the song and the words of the song. Also it's great cd to buy if you don't like overmanufactured artists. You get a true feel of their voices and how talented they are. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is becuase of the single "When you Tell me that you Love Me" where everyone sings. While everyone gets to sing it seems to highlight Carrie Underwood too much. I would reccomend picking this up if you have eclectic musical taste, and enjoy great singing.

These CDs Never Turn Out That Good

Carrie's "Independence Day", Vonzell's "Best of My Love", Mikalah's "God Bless The Child", and Nadia's "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", are the only songs worth listening to on this CD besides the single that all the contestants sing "When You Tell Me Than You Love Me." What's great about this CD as opposed to the CDs from the past two seasons, is that is got back to doing songs that the contestants actually did ON the show like the first season's CD. Kind of disappointed, but it's a great buy if you're an American Idol fanatic.

    Wonderful, Inspirational It's a Keeper

I really enjoyed the various artists styles of music presented here. This CD is a winner, better than I thought it would be. Congratulations to the contestants on hard work well done.

    Surprisingly good

As a nonavid American Idol watcher, a friend purchased this CD for me during a gift exchange. The performers in this CD are pretty good. Some of the better performers were Nadia Turner's "You don't have to say you love me." and Bo Bice's "I Don't Want to Be." Scott Savol and Nikko Smith were very impressive, particularly Nikko Smith. One wonders if it's Stevie Wonder's original. Very easy listening and surprisingly good.

    THOUGHTS ON IDOL

In the beginning of the season a guy was said to for sure to win. But now I am hoping another girl takes it to the top. This CD is overall a great CD. Some of course better than others. My favorites on this CD are Bo, Vonzell, Nikko, and Scott. My favorites this season were Vonzell, Nikko, Anwar, and Carrie. I would definatley recommend this to all Idol fans!

    Showstoppers? I Think Not.

The tracks are disappointed to me, because although the title is Showstoppers, only Jessica and Nadia chose their showstoppers.

American Idol Aims for the Top!

The 4th season of American Idol began with a great start! Although, the boys were taking the lead where as the girls weren't as good this year. Many viewers enjoy watching the show as it has a Guiness World Record for one of the most watched shows in the U.S.! When I first listened to this album I could tell that they all had worked extremely hard! Bo Bice, one of my favorite Idol contestants really sounds professional! Carrie Underwood, the pretty country singer is headed for the record company, and Vonzell Solomon is the next Alicia Keys! The C-D has some great songs that all American Idol fans will love! The reason why I gave this album four stars is because I wasn't completely impressed. The contestant's mixed genres were the only problem. Enjoy the album!

    Anwar Robinson Shines

When you listen to the album all the contestants are talented, but when Anwar sings - it becomes very clear that Anwar is the heart and soul of the competition. His clean, pure rendition of this song absolutely makes chills - you feel like he is in your home and telling you the story of why you should love where you live and live where you love. Excellent, pure joy to listen to his voice....Well done

Pick a Number: It's Four for AI4's new cd

While this cd inexplicably took longer to deliver than past seasons, it could be described as worth waiting for. Granted, the lack of a theme for the song choices may leave the cd somewhat unfocused. That said, a wide-open choice of songs allows me to imagine Bo doing a nice rendition of "Green, Green Grass of Home", or Carrie trying her hand at some classic rock by tackling Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit." Jessica's best performance of the year is highlighted, also, although you won't be able to sample it here unless you select Scott Savol's; if you select Jessica's, you will be able to hear a snippet of yet another version of Constantine's "Valentine"--a real fan favorite. The top three, though, are right where you'd expect to find them, with one of Vonzell's best performances on track no. 3. All in all, this cd is an effort very much worthy of you close scrutiny.

    fair

Bo, Carrie, nikko, and Jessica are the best on this album. The others sound terrible or possibly it was just poor song choice. You can tell why Bo and Carrie made it to the finals. ANd you realize that Jessica and Nikko should have lasted longer, espeically Jessica. What a great voice.
