All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Released the day Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee battled it out for the title of American Idol, American Idol Season 5: Encores offers a recap of season five, which may well be remembered as the season where the final 12 contestants were the most evenly matched. That doesn't necessarily mean that all of the 12 were standouts: this collection of studio-recorded encores of songs that the contestants sang early in the season proves that the final five of Taylor, Katharine, Elliott, Chris, and Paris were indeed five of the most deserving contestants, and they all acquit themselves pretty well on record. Taylor remains the most distinctive, partially because guys who sound like a cross between Michael McDonald and Joe Cocker do indeed stand apart from the pack, as his "Takin' It to the Streets" proves, but Katharine does have some personality on record, even if "Think" might not have been her best moment ("Someone to Watch Over Me" probably should have been revived). As the judges were saying all season, Chris does prove to have a voice that's well suited for recording, but as dependable as he sounds on this version of "Wanted Dead or Alive," he doesn't sound all that different from any of the post-grunge rockers that cluttered the airwaves in 1996. Paris, however, fares better on record than she did on the program, since it's easy to appreciate how rich her voice is on its own terms. Sadly, the always likeable Elliott Yamin is a bit underwhelming on record, where his rasp doesn't sound soulful; it sounds a little too smoky. But he's far from the worst thing here -- that title belongs to Ace, whose anemic reading of "Father Figure" sounds wimpier than he ever did on the show. On the other hand, Bucky's growling "Superstition" actually sounds bolder and better than it did on the program, as does Melissa McGhee's "What About Love" -- she may already be forgotten by the time this album is released, but this recording suggests she had a more interesting voice than either Lisa, whose "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" is perfunctory, or Kellie, whose "Walkin' After Midnight" is clueless. That leaves Mandisa and Kevin, who are exactly on record as they are on the show: Mandisa is powerful, but a little generic, while Kevin is just lucky he got on TV. So that all adds up to a pretty high batting average -- maybe no home runs (although some may argue that Taylor squeaks by and hits home plate), but only one strike-out, and a lot of it isn't bad at all, even with AmIdol's relentlessly cheap karaoke backing tracks for the singers. Which means this may indeed be the best American Idol yet, at least as far as the souvenir records go.

    This Season was okay

I have to admit that this season was a bit of a bummer. There was no real talent except for a few people (I would say these singers were Kellie, Chris, Mandisa, and Lisa) compared to the previous seasons. The top two were a disappointment, especially Katherine who I think has no real vocal talent despite her runner up position and there tracks were not really worth listening to. The best two tracks by far were Kellie's and Chris'. Kellie especially has a great voice, and Chris ' song was perfectly in his vocal range. These two should have been the top two!

Equality was not a factor in this CD

O.k let me start out that I loved evryone on this season, some not as much as others but this was one of the better seasons, even though it should've been Chris and Kat in the final round. Song choice is one of the biggest issues I have. Who chose them? I doubt it was the singers because amazing vocalists Katharine, Mandina, Chris, and Lisa were given awful choices. Yeah their good but by far not their best. I realize they couldn't have Katharine's amzing Over the Rainbow or Chris's Suspicious Minds but they could've put on Hemorage or Kat's Who Wants To Live Forever. Also the song timing, some of the contestiants *mainly Bucky and Tyler* had four and a half minute songs whereas Katherine had a two minute song and the rest got songs that barely pushed three minutes. Someone in the recording studio had favorites and gave them the best songs. It's just not fair to have Bucky sing Superstition and have Lisa sing Signed Sealed Delivered. Well here's the total evaluation. 1. What About Love- I like Melissa's take on it, though not as good as Hearts, and she sings it well, though it is a little bit too big for her toward the end. 2.Superstition- Good for Bucky, he sounds better in studio live than on stage and how he got a four minute song was amazing, wonder what it is he did exactly? 3.I'm Every Woman- Love Mandisa but this song is not her best, she did so good on so many of her earlier songs and this one just hides her true talent. 4. Wnated Dead or Alive-Chris is hot, amazing, talented, and will probably go farther than all the other contestants combined but let's hope this too slow and not heavy enough jam isn't on his album. 5.Father Figure- What can I say Ace sings this song perfectly and it goes well with his vocal range. 6.Takin it To The STreets- I'm far too used to the old version and I shouldn't even judge this because this is awful compared to the old, but i do know Tyler has a good voice. 7.Signed Sealed Delivered- Lisa is so so good and like Mandisa isn't given a good enough song, I would've liekd to seen her sing Because of You, it was better than Kelly C's anyway. 8.Walkin After Midnight- Pickler does a good job and she has a good voice but I doubt we'll see her no 1 on charts anytime soon. 9.Moody's Mood- Elliot's looks scare me to death but he does a good job on this song. 10.Think- I could've cried, Kat was so given the wrong song. Katherine has one of the purest voices the shows ever had and she can be so amazing when she sits down and sings a slow song, but no they give her this two minute junk that in no way reveals her talent or her vocal range. When her CD singel with Over The Rainbow comes out I'll be the first to buy it. 11.Midnight train- Love Paris and love her doing this song. 12.When i fall In Love-Kevin, dorky but cute, was given the right song for him. Hope we see his face again. Hope this helps. If youre an Idol fan you'll love this CD, but if your obsessed like me it will come as a little bit of a bummer. But either way give it a cahnce maybe you'll like it maybe you won't.

    GREAT CD

This really has been the best season of AI and this CD is great! As an offical member of the Soul Patrol, I think Taylor is awesome. I think Bucky got an unfair rap on the show and he sounds great with that country growl of his! But as much as I love Taylor and Bucky, the best track on the CD belongs to Elliott. I didn't become a fan of his until late in the season, but that boy can sing and it shows on this CD. WONDERFUL CD

    A Big AI Fan!!!

I just loved Season 5 of American Idol. My personal favorite was Chris Daughtry who i think rocks "Wanted (Dead or Alive)". But I think the Top 12 is great, they are all really great singers and each of the songs on the album is great. This season is by far the best.

    THE MEN RULE!

The three men in the middle are the best. Chris rocks, Taylor rolls, and Ace is smooth, flawless, and full of soul. Buy it for them!

    Bucky is fantastic

Although Bucky's voice wasn't really showcased on the show due to the band drowning him most of the time, his rendition on this cd proves that he can sing. He has a wonderful, unique voice. I can't wait until he puts out his own cd. I will certainly be buying multiple copies to give out as gifts. Bucky is one fantastic performer and I am glad that so many people are finally seeing what Bucky fans have seen all along.

I'm listening to it right now for the umpteenth time...

until they come to Portland in early September. I feel so sorry for Melissa given her limited screen time. Thank god Kevin's single comes last. Maybe he should reteam with David Radford, Will Makar and that other white kid to form a retro boy band. Elliott's voice is one to take to the grave. He deserves a long, healthy music career. Paris should cut a jazz CD. It should appeal to kids who thought she should win. Thank god for Taylor being a culmination of Michael McDonald, Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Bill Clinton, George Clooney, Jay Leno and still being unique.

    American Idol 5 Encore

This CD has several outstanding performances, but the best by far is Ace Young's 'Father Figure.' Ace's unique r&b/pop/soul style will make you listen to this again and again. Chris Daughtry's vocals on 'Dead or Alive' are powerful, and Melissa McGhee has does an amazing job with 'What about Love?' Katharine puts a sassy spin on 'Think' that's really enjoyable. These are the best four on the CD.

Okay i am THE BIGGEST american idol fanatic and i am the biggest katharine mcphee and melissa mcghee fan ever. Okay so...Let's all face it..MELISSA MCGHEE's SONG IS THE BEST. SHE SINGS IT SOOO AMAZINGLY. okay and as for kat's song...it was good..it just wasnt great. i think she did better on american idol performing it. (cannot wait to get her single,...BUY IT!! AND SUPPORT KAT) okay and im not that big of a taylor fan but he did good on the track. and the only song i HATE is Kevin's...okay and besides all that the album is ...pretty good. i would have chose a better song of Chris' to put on the album even though he rocks, and Paris' just about put me to sleep...sorry paris. like i sed b4..."u did it better on the show" and Bucky's song really surprised me, he did good. and elliott...gosh whyd they choose that song for him. He did amazing on "heaven" why didnt they put that on there!? and Mandisa ROCKS MY SOX!!! she is amazing. Ace's song is AMAZING, hes great. okay so thats the reality check...overall- "buy the album" Best Song on album-"what about love"-Melissa McGhee (she better get a record deal cause she would be an amazing artist.

    Good yet bad...

I'm ranking them according to my favourite to my least favourie of the season... 1. Lisa Tucker- Signed, Sealed, Delivered(I'm yours)- It was not my favourite choice of song but she did do it well. You might find it a bit boring but this girl can sing! I'd give it 3 and a half stars 2. Katharine McPhee-Think- So what this ain't her best song? She can sing darn well and she has got a great voice.. I thought it was great... I'd give it a 4. 3. Paris Bennet- Midnight Train in Georgia- What a great voice! I love her... she was wonderful..took my breath away.. I'd give it a 4. 4. Elliott Yamin- Moody's Mood for Love- Although I didn't get up and dance like paula, he sang an incredibly difficult too sing song well and it was worth my time. I'd give it a 4 and a half. 5. Mandisa-I'm every woman- Big voice. Great Singer. Spectacular... I'd give it a 4. 6. Chris- Wanted Dead or Alive- Although it was not his great song he still sang it well. I'd give it a 3 and a half 7. Ace Young- Father Figure- Like Chris not a great song, but he still sang it well. Like Chris, a 3 and a half 8. Kellie Pickler-Walking after midnight- Boring. Not a good voice but I thought it was somewhat good and she deserves a 3. 9.Melissa McGhee-What About Love- I hated her for taking Ayla's place in the top 12 but she did do well.I'd give it a 3 and a half 10. Taylor Hicks-Taking it To The Streets- Not as good as the one on American Idol. He is a performer not a Singer and because of that, he won't sell that well, he will sell like one million records but not as many as the other winners. I'd give it a 3. 11. Bucky Covington-Superstition- He chose the wrong song and he does not have a good voice. 2. 12. Kevin Covais-When I fall in love- Pathethic. Wimpy. Bad. Horrible. A waste of time. half.

    awesome!

I loved it. This has had the best contestants but not the best performances. Last year everyone usually did their best. I love Mandisa and Chris on here. They did awesome. They should have been the top 2.

ACE YOUNG IS STANDOUT ON CD

I was pleasantly surprised by the single Father Figure on the AI Cd. It was the most original recording on the Cd that was changed to not sound Karaoke like most of the other songs on the CD. Ace Young's signature Falsetto is on point and very smooth to the ears. Great recording voice for those who were skeptical how some of the AI contestants would translate on record. Other standouts are Melissa McGhee, Elliott Yamin and Chris Daughtry. Cd worth purchasing for these singles only in my opinion.

    Bucky Covington gets 5 stars

I love his rendition of Superstition. I wouldn't have picked the song for him and I doubt he picked it for himself. His genre is Country/Rock, but he really pulled it off. He sounds GREAT on this CD and I will be waiting in line to buy HIS first CD made Bucky Style.

    Very strong showing

These are non-professionals who are mostly recording for the first time, I think most of the reviews are being very harsh. Loved Ace Youngs "Father Figure" it is incredibly sexy. Great choice for him. Chris Daughtry is doing his rocker best! All in all this is a great CD to throw on because there is something for everyone.

The Best Cd To Put a Smile On Your Face! :)

If you are looking for a cd you can dance to or that will make you smile, this is the cd to own. It's a wonderful combination of all the talents from Season Five. Here is a list of the songs on the cd and my opinion on how well they sound. 1.What About Love/Melissa Mcghee -I'm surprised! She did a very good job on this song. It sounds really awesome and her vocals are great. 2.Superstition/Bucky Covington -I liked this one. It sounds pretty good, but Bucky has a bit too much of his country voice in it. 3.I'm Every Women/Mandisa -WOW! This girl can really sing! She does a terrific job on this song and it really does want to make you dance! 4.Wanted Dead or Alive/Chris Daughtry -This is my second favorite song on the cd. It really rocks and Chris sounds outstanding! 5.Father Figure/Ace Young -By far my most favorite song on the cd! Ace sounds professional and does a FANTASTIC job. His falsetto is great, too. America, this boy was born to sing!:) 6.Takin' It To the Streets/Taylor Hicks -Taylor did a good job on this one and I will admit I've grown to like it quite well. 7.Signed,Sealed,Delivered/Lisa Tucker -Lisa has a really pretty voice and does well, though I think a ballad might have been better. 8.Walkin' After Midnight/Kelly Pickler -I really liked her version of this song on the AI show, but after hearing the whole song on the cd I have to say that she might could have done better. 9.Moody's Mood For Love/Elliot Yamin -Elliot has such a soothing voice. It's amazing what he can do! Great song, too. 10.Think/Katherine McPhee -This is a very energetic song and it's pretty good, but not the best. 11.Midnight Train to Georgia/Paris Bennett -Paris did an AWESOME job on this song and I really think I like it better than the original. 12.When I Fall In Love/Kevin Covais -Kevin did an okay job with this, but since I'm keepin' it real I have to say he could have done better.

The best American Idol Compilation to date!

    1. What About Love 9.5 - Melissa showcases her excellent, raw vocals on this track that is perfectly catered to her voice. 2. Superstition 8.0 - Bucky is not my favorite contestant, and he really doesn't have a spectacular voice, but his country charm is enough to cary this song. 3. I'm Every Woman 8.5 - Mandisa shows that she was eliminated far too early, although she is by no means the best vocalist on the show. 4. Wanted Dead or Alive 10.0 - In my oppinion, I don't know how Chris didn't win the entire competition. 5. Father Figure 10.0 - Ace sounds incredible, singing his only stellar performance on the show. If he keeps this up, he has a huge career ahead of him! 6. Takin' It to the Streets 8.5 - I think Taylor will wind up winning. He serves up great performances week after week and he has a great set of pipes. It's not the best track on the album, but definately worth while. 7. Signed, Sealed, Delivered 10.0 - Lisa Tucker has a spectacular recording voice. Her personality, which was not always showcased on the show, shines through. 8. Walkin' After Midnight 9.0 - If Kellie sang like this in her final weeks of American Idol she would have sailed through to the top 4. 9. Moody's Mood for Love 8.5 - Elliott is a favorite of mine, however, I don't think he sounds his best on this track. It is a little bit off, however, he is in his element. 10. Think 6.0 - As much as I like Katharine, I cringed at some of the screechy notes in her rendition of the classic Aretha Franklin song. It has its moments, but some of it is painful. 11. Midnight Train to Georgia 7.5 - Paris is in her element. She sounds good, and really gets into the song. 12. When I Fall in Love 5.5 - Chicken Little does his best on this track. I don't think he can cut it in the business, but he is very likeable.

    Most can't sing

Most can't sing. The voices here rang from thin to sharp. Having to just hear them as you would in the real world, two come out as pleasures and the rest fall at varying rates. My picks to listen to are Elliott Yamin and Melissa Mcghee (surprisingly)

Ace Young is the REAL American Idol!!

Wow, after listening to this CD it's obvious who the real star of season 5 was, ACE YOUNG! He is simply amazing singing Father Figure, sweet perfection. And it doesn't hurt that he's by FAR the best looking contestant American Idol has ever had. Too bad America definitely got it wrong when they let him go! He blows the others away! I know we'll be seeing A LOT more from Ace, American Idol's loss is someone else's gain for sure! I can't wait until he records his own CD, it will definitely be amazing!
