American Matador

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Guitar instrumentalist Marc Bonilla is to Robin Trower what Trower was to Jimi Hendrix, a slavish imitator who nevertheless goes off on tangents all his own. Well, actually, some of Bonilla's tangents belong to Jeff Beck. So, it's funny that on his second album, American Matador, Bonilla includes not one but two versions of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale," the initial hit by Procol Harum, Trower's old group. And what's the joke? Trower didn't join the band until shortly after that song was recorded!

    I Also Recommend:

    Guitar music for true listeners

This album was originally released back in -93. I was lucky enough to find it in -96. I read the booklet and there were a couple of interesting names and comments to every song to find in it. So I gave it a try. Since then it has never left my favourite-list of great albums. Marc Bonilla was never involved in the neo-classical vein, although he can easily switch into that thing if there is a need for it. I think most music styles are represented here, in one way or another, with great support from session musicians involved. My favorite track is "In the blue corner", an instrumental track with a "highway-feeling". Highly recommended.
