This is a masterpiece by the great American historian combining a synthesis of political, social, and cultural developments which as a whole is still unsurpassed since the book was first published in 1950. It picks up where Vernon Parrington left off. Commager certainly equals his master and with Merle Curti makes up the triumvirate of historians of American thought. Was this review helpful?
