American Minor

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
The list of bands that require some sort of prefix to accompany their particular brand of rock is ever expanding, but in a sea of "punk-," "post-," "emo-," and "pop-" combos, American Minor stand out for their dedication to plainspoken, capital-R Rock. The quintet's unfussiness probably has something to do with their being rooted in rural West Virginia, and a bit to do with a collective music collection that's heavy on Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones, and the Black Crowes. AM owe more to that last band than the others, particularly on the bluesy strut "Cheaters and Non-Believers," a tune that makes the most of frontman Rob McCutcheon's agreeably slurry drawl. The band alternate between playing rough, as when guitarists Bud Carroll and Josh Gragg throw down the boogie gauntlet during the stomping "Buffalo Creek," and tweaking gently, as on the waltz-time album closer "Sleepwalking." Yes, they wear their influences on their sleeves on occasion -- if Neil Young were to hear "Shine," he might want to ask them to return his "Cinnamon Girl" riff -- but that's a minor no pun intended complaint for a band that's clearly capable of showing major talent.
All Music Guide - Greg Prato
Musical fads may come and go, but it seems like no matter what year, the hard-edged blues-boogie of the '70s the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, etc. will always serve as inspiration for a new generation of rockers. After all, the '80s saw the emergence of the Black Crowes, the '90s saw Lenny Kravitz, and in the early 21st century, American Minor is following in the others' footsteps. Hailing from the Kanawha River Valley of southern West Virginia, the five-piece band is not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves. Produced by one-time Blind Melon bandmates Brad Smith and Christopher Thorn, the songs on American Minor's self-titled, full-length debut prove to be not quite as hook heavy as the aforementioned retro acts. But the group has a more apparent hard rocking edge, which will appeal to the headbangers. Chockfull of bluesy leads and soulful vocals, organ also plays a prominent part in American Minor's sound, as evidenced by such tracks as "Mr. Queen." But the best bits are when the boys crank the amp's up to ten -- on "Shine" and album opener "Walk On," quite possibly the album's best track.
