Overview

American Moderns on Paper presents a selection of approximately 100 of the finest watercolors, pastels, and drawings by leading American modernists from the Wadsworth Atheneum’s renowned collection of American art. Works by Sloan, O’Keeffe, Hopper, Marin, Dalí, and Wyeth, among many others, serve as notable examples of the various styles and subjects pursued by artists in America from 1910 to 1960. The catalogue entries are accompanied by artist biographies.

Organized chronologically, and generously illustrated throughout, the catalogue is introduced by two essays exploring the historical significance of the collection and the importance to American modernists of working on paper, rather than canvas. Providing a rich history of the collection, the volume illuminates not only its historic roots, but also the concurrent national evolution of interest in watercolor and drawings.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This handsomely produced catalog of the traveling exhibition (at the Portland Museum of Art, ME, from June 22 to Sept. 10) focuses on some of the finest and most avant-garde works in pastels, watercolors, and drawings by modernists of the early 20th century. Organized chronologically and edited by Kornhauser (chief curator & Krieble Curator of American Painting & Sculpture, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art), this volume opens with an enlightening historical-contextual chapter on the history of modern American watercolors and drawings, while subsequent essays describe and illustrate the development and diversity of this evolving genre. Works by John Marin, Maurice Prendergast, William Glackens, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Andrew Wyeth are among the scores of modern, cutting-edge artists for whom drawing and watercolors are among their most ambitious and groundbreaking works. Also featured are lesser-known but no less important innovators of modern art who demonstrate the range of modernist and postmodern experimentation. VERDICT With superb essays and beautiful illustrations accompanied by informative notes, this volume is a necessary and highly recommended addition to art research library collections and collections focused on American modernism.—Herbert E. Shapiro, Empire State Coll. of SUNY, Rochester
