Overview

American Novel Explication covers U.S. and Canadian novels from their beginnings in the eighteenth century to the present. This is the first volume of a companion series to the popular English Novel Explication series, and, with the addition of Canadian novelists, is meant to pick up where Donna Gerstenberger's and George Hendrick's American Novel: A Checklist of Twentieth Century Criticism left off.

Volume I covers the years 1991 through 1995. American Novel Explication is designed to help students locate literary criticism quickly and easily. The body of the book is alphabetical by author and then alphabetical by novel title. Criticism indexed is in both French and English, and includes articles from journals, chapters from books, as well as whole books devoted to a particular novel. "See" references appear for novels known by more than one title, as well as for authors known by more than one name. Each journal entry includes full article title, as well as an abbreviated journal title, volume number, and page numbers. Full journal titles appear at the front of the book in the "List of Journals Indexed" section. Book citations have abbreviated titles along with the appropriate page references. Full book citations appear at the back of the volume in the "List of Books Indexed" section.

As many years have gone by since the Gerstenberger and Hendrick volumes were published, this new series begins with current criticisms published in the 90s. Subsequent volumes will include retrospective volumes covering the years 1969-1980; 1981-1985; 1986-1990; as well as volumes that will bring the series thoroughly up-to-date in five-year increments.

The American Novel Explication series isdesigned to give coverage not available in other reference series. It con concentrates on the American novel; it goes back to the earliest American novels; it includes Canadian novelists writing in both French and English; it is arranged by the title of the work being criticized, not by the title of the critical article. It will become the most complete and definitive reference tool for librarians, teachers, and students on all levels, from high school on up.
