From The Critics
Reviewer: Karen A. Pfeifer, MSN, RN, CNA(Texas Woman's University)Description: This book contains 21 chapters, four appendixes, and a posttest that allows nurses to evaluate their comprehension of the material presented throughout the text.
Purpose: It provides nurses with the broad base of knowledge needed to pass the American Nurses Association's certification examination in medical-surgical nursing. This indeed is a worthy objective as certification in medical-surgical nursing is professional recognition of a nurse's knowledge and practice.
Audience: Medical-surgical nurses in all settings comprise the intended audience for this text.
Features: General features include 13 chapters providing a comprehensive review of the most common pathophysiologic conditions affecting the body systems. Appropriate nursing assessments and interventions for each condition are included. Rationales for each nursing action provide a complete foundation for planning nursing care. While there are no illustrations, tables concisely summarize important facts and concepts. Other chapters present information on test-taking strategies, foundations of nursing, legal and ethical issues in nursing practice, physical examination, principles of inbound care and home health care, and the nurse's role during the perioperative period. Four appendixes provide additional information, including the most current taxonomy of nursing diagnoses, the medical-surgical nurse's role in performing diagnostic procedures and tests, a general review of the diagnosis and management of cancer, and medications in each major drug class.
Assessment: Nurses taking the certification examination in medical-surgical nursing must demonstrate exceptional knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge to a variety of clinical situations. This text contains all the information needed to successfully prepare for the certification examination. The most useful feature of this text is the posttest. It is written in the same format as the certification examination and provides correct answers and rationales. The posttest, along with a helpful diagnostic profile, gives nurses a reliable indication of which areas require further review.
