Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Natchia L. Talbert, RN, BSN (Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center)
Description: This is the third volume of a biographical dictionary recognizing notable women in American and Canadian nursing in the twentieth century. Thumbnail biographical sketches are provided of women who were identified and nominated by the American Association for the History of Nursing.
Purpose: The editors state that, "This volume records the movement of nursing and of women into the American and Canadian mainstream. It serves as a key to documenting the changes in attitudes toward professional women during the last part of the twentieth century." Their stories and lives need recognition and documentation for those who come after them.
Audience: There should be appeal for this book among students, nurses, and those interested in gender issues and the changing roles and status of women.
Features: These biographical sketches capture the pioneering efforts of these women in a suitable format. There is a publication list and a bibliography at the end of each sketch as applicable. There is no helpful cross-reference or index to identify leaders in selected areas of interest such as education, public health, or management. That would be useful. The pictures are limited and the quality poor; many of the photographs are too dark. This distracts greatly from the appeal of the book. The book cover is not distinctive or particularly appealing.
Assessment: This book fills a niche as a documentary of those women who were at the forefront of innovation and leadership in nursing and in the changing role of women. Until recently women were ignored and denied recognition in their fields of endeavor. This historical, biographical dictionary ensures that the lives and contributions of these women will be remembered.
