Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Beautiful patterns in their coats distinguish this breed of horse, the American Paint Horse. Brief, introductory information about this horse is arranged in three chapters with color photographs throughout the book. The first chapter describes the physical features and ways to distinguish two types of coat patterns, tobiano and overo. The color photographs help to support this information but could be more direct by using arrows and captions to clearly point out and differentiate the patterns. The second is about the foal and its growth as the coat pattern develops; an inset describes how horses are measured in terms of hands. The third and final chapter is about how these horses are used and their temperament. Young readers may benefit from an introduction of how to use the informational text features including the table of contents, glossary, and index. Those children interested in more in-depth information about the American Paint Horse may find the list of additional resources as a place to start their investigation. For those horse lovers who would like to read about other breeds of horses, there are five other books in this "Horses" series. Layout and presentation are similar across the books in the series.
