Library Journal - Library Journal
This exhibition catalog is the result of a study program carried out by graduate students at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts and curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In footnoted essays, many by students, the book traces the history of pastel from the 19th century in Europe among the Impressionists to this century's modernists. The 35 pieces that comprise the show are all American and are reproduced in full-color plates accompanied by descriptions of each work. Artists who worked in this medium such as Dove, Whistler, Cassatt, Chase, O'Keeffe, and Marin are represented, but their works are limited to the provenance of the Met. Also illustrated in black and white is a checklist of the 175 pastels in the museum's permanent collection. The book adds to an appreciation of pastel as a medium used by major artists. Recommended for comprehensive collections.--Ellen Bates, New York
