Overview

Yes, two years have gone by since Jason Biggs got up close and personal with his dessert in the teen farce American Pie, but that doesn't necessarily translate into maturity, as proven by the sequel, American Pie 2, which catches up Biggs's Jim after his first year as a college student. Nor does it lead to musical maturity, as the accompanying soundtrack is an appropriately punky, giddy, and goofy collection of adolescent angst and power-chord pounding. The leading lights of punk-pop all turn up for the occasion: Blink 182 offer a snotty slice of anti-romance in "Everytime I Look at You," and fans of the '80s teen comedy classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High will appreciate Fenix TX's lustful ode, "Phoebe Cates." The disc contains a few previously released tracks, from Green Day and Oleander, but piles on the new material a bit more heavily than most movie collections. Of the newer tunes, standouts include Alien Ant Farm's wiry "Good (for a Woman)" and Uncle Kracker's down-and-dirty "I'm Gonna Split This Room in Half," which hits quite a bit harder than his Top Ten hit "Follow." By the time the likely third installment of the American Pie series rolls around, Jim might very well be in grad school with artier tunes on the brain. For now, however, the party continues full throttle, so dive in at the shallow end while there's still time.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Leslie Mathew
The charitable would call the American Pie 2 soundtrack consistent and focussed. The more hard-eyed would spot it for the cookie-cutter, formula-milking creature that it is -- full of the kind of second-generation punk-pop that goes in one ear and out the other faster than one can look up the meaning of "derivative" in the dictionary. Ironically then, it is the unknowns who stand out in the modern-rock-by-numbers assault. Far and away the best songs on the set are Jettingham's "Cheating" ("If I'm leaving with a broken heart, you're leaving with a broken nose") and Fenix*TX's sprightly power pop ode "Phoebe Cates." Also impressive: the mock-aggro hip-hop of Uncle Kracker's "(I'm Gonna) Split This Room in Half." As for the big guns, there's Blink 182 making a return appearance (they were on the first soundtrack as well) and Green Day, both of whom turn in competent, if ordinary, tracks. On the other hand, the best thing that can be said about Alien Ant Farm's "Good (For a Woman)" is that it's not as wretched as their allegedly funny cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" (which featured on the film but is absent from the album). Throw in a couple of tracks for the ladies -- the smoky, post-Spice Girls dance-pop of Angela Ammons' "Always Getting Over You" and "Halo" by Oleander -- and there is a soundtrack that's entirely predictable and largely one-dimensional, but sporadically enjoyable all the same.

''everywhere'' by michelle ranch is so class as well as ''want you bad'' by Offspring...... why rn't they on there. It still kicks and has good variety but another one would still get loads of sales from every1 who bought the ''American Pie 2 soundtrack'', cause the other songs r just as good.

This is one of the teenage punk album of the year. With bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, Alien Ant Farm and Green Day. A must have!

I was VERY dissapointed when I read the track listing for this CD. After seeing American Pie 2 I was very excited about buying this soundtrack, as the movie contained mant great songs. However, this soundtrack is missing the 3 best ones: Weezer's ''Hash Pipe,'' Offspring's ''Want You Bad,'' and most imprtantly, New Found Glory's ''Hit or Miss.'' The CD still contains some great songs, but without those 3, I will not be purchasing it.

The songs on this album are great. However, many other great tunes from the movie are missing. That was quite disappointing. They need to make a ''More songs from American Pie 2'' album...I would certainly buy it.

This is a great soundtrack, it's the first that I've ever heard that only has one bad song on it. It's amazing that such a funny movie could have such a sweet sound track. Buy it.

We have a missing song that was very true for this movie. The song is ''Want you bad'' by the Offsrping off their ''conspiracy of One'' CD. Then they are missing Alien ant farms ''Smooth Criminal'' remix. the last song that has a lot of relevence to American Pie 2 is ''Everywhere'' by Michelle Branch. But other than that this soundtrack is a great collection for any teen. The mixture of songs is amazing and should stay around for a while.
