Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
American Pit Bull Terriers, part of ABDO Publishing Company's "Checkerboard Animal Library Series" "Dogs Set IX," is designed to aid children in the process of selecting and caring for a new dog, as well as provide basic historical and practical information about the breed. Beginning with the chapter entitled The Dog Family the book describes the basic history of the domestic dog and focuses on the fact that some dogs were raised for fighting and that dog-fighting is illegal in the US and Canada. It states that the American Pit Bull Terrier was often raised to be aggressive toward other dogs, "however many people believe these dogs do not deserve their bad reputation." The chapter entitled American Pit Bull Terriers goes into more detail on the breed's traits, abilities, and history as a working breed, and the fact that the breed comes from bulldog and terrier ancestors and is not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Seven short chapters follow including What They're Like, Coat and Color, Size (featuring a photo of an American Pit Bull terrier ?concentrating' which created a wrinkled forehead), Care, Feeding (a wonderful photo of a American pit bull terrier with its tongue out emphasizes the breed's tendency to bloat), Things They Need, and Puppies (which notes that a prospective family should find a responsible breeder and the breed's need for socialization). Emphasis on the breed's aggressive background and need for training and socialization are covered. A 16-word glossary containing words related to this breed is followed by a paragraph on Web Sites and reference to ABDO Publishing's website, and Index. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
