Overview

Covering every Presidential campaign and election from George Washington's to George W. Bush's, these three volumes offer an overview of the changing nature of presidential politics in the United States. Editors Shade (Lehigh U.) and Campbell (Northeastern U.) have allowed for the same amount of material in each case, a choice some might see as limiting to the more contentious and interesting elections. Each entry contains a brief chronology of relevant political developments, brief biographical sketches of presidential and vice-presidential candidates (including important third party contenders), an analytical essay, voting statistics, and documentary collections of relevant speeches, debates, and letters. The entries are preceded, in the first volume, by a series of essays looking at such topics as changing levels of suffrage, the influence of major parties, the impact of third parties, the evolution of nominating conventions, and the roles of the media and campaign financing in politics. Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Despite no mention of political parties in the U.S. Constitution and a warning about them in George Washington's Farewell Address, the American political system gave birth to a vibrant two-party system, including the world's oldest political party. In this comprehensive encyclopedia, editors Shade (history, emeritus, Lehigh Univ.) and Campbell (history, Northeastern Univ.) cover both the large and the small dimensions of America's electoral history. While there are introductory and thematic chapters, the bulk of the publication is made up of chronological chapters covering the quadrennial contests between 1788 and 2000. Fascinating, readable, and illustrated with photographs and cartoons, these sections are authored by nearly four dozen scholars and place each presidential campaign in historical sequence, along with background information on the major candidates, issues, and campaign organizations. "Highlight" portions within those sections capture the most memorable moment of the campaigns (e.g., a brief discussion of Richard Nixon's "Checkers" speech in 1952, the "daisy ad" from Lyndon Johnson's 1964 campaign), a brief chronology of the campaign, and background data on each presidential, vice presidential, and "also ran" candidate. The electoral maps and tables with a state-by-state popular and electoral vote for major candidates are a reference librarian's dream given the data's accessibility. The third volume contains appendixes with a glossary and a detailed chronology and bibliography. In conjunction with the much briefer Encyclopedia of American Parties, Campaigns, and Elections, edited by William C. Binning and others, and The Encyclopedia of the Republican/The Encyclopedia of the Democratic Party, edited by George T. Kurian, this publication serves to complete a reference set for libraries on the American electoral process. An essential purchase for both public and academic libraries.-William D. Pederson, Louisiana State Univ., Shreveport Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-A comprehensive look at presidential campaigns from 1788 through 2000. Each section includes a lengthy essay that discusses the times, issues, and candidates. Each entry generally begins with pre-primary strategies and follows through to the conventions, elections, and a brief look at the elected president's early days in office. Fact boxes about each candidate; excerpts from debates, speeches, and other documents; and maps and tables are also included. Highlighted boxes offer extra information about key issues or events related to some campaigns, such as "Manifest Destiny" in 1844 and "The Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy" in 1968. The first volume includes several general pieces on the electoral process, introducing such elements as the role of third parties, conventions, and campaign finance over time. Many of these issues are also addressed within particular campaigns, lending continuity to the set. Though dozens of authors contribute essays, style and approach are generally consistent. The scholarly tone is nicely balanced by the authors' enthusiasm and fascination with political history. Cumulative indexes (both general and biographical) are featured in each volume, making navigation easy. More detailed than Fred Israel's Student's Atlas of American Presidential Elections, 1789-1996 (Congressional Quarterly, 1997) or Yanek Mieczkowski's The Routledge Historical Atlas of Presidential Elections (Routledge, 2001) and less overwhelming than Congressional Quarterly's Guide to U.S. Elections (Congressional Quarterly, 2003), this is an accessible and informative choice for students.-Steven Engelfried, Beaverton City Library, OR Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
