Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Sahana Misra, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: The Synopsis of Psychiatry is a condensed version of the American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Psychiatry and encompasses all areas of psychiatry from theoretical foundations to psychiatric treatments.
Purpose: The purpose was to provide an affordable yet complete text appropriate for the medical student level as well as beginning residents in psychiatry, primary care, and neurology. The most relevant material from each chapter of the textbook was edited for inclusion in this book. The result is a clearly written and interesting book that meets the authors' objectives.
Audience: This book is primarily targeted at third- and fourth-year medical students as well as first-year residents. It also serves as a convenient resource for all clinicians. The noteworthy authors are all original contributors to the main text.
Features: The book is divided into five sections consisting of theoretical foundations, assessment, psychiatric disorders, psychiatric treatments, and special topics (i.e., the law, ethics, women and psychiatry, administration in psychiatry). Each chapter cites several important references, most of which are up-to-date. Many tables as well as DSM-IV criteria and pictures are included when necessary.
Assessment: Although this book is still quite lengthy, the material it contains is essential to learning about the field of psychiatry. This book is an excellent choice for medical school programs to consider as their standard psychiatry clerkship text due to its clear and concise nature. Residency programs should also consider recommending this text to beginning residents.
