During this time Daniels shows how American scientists emerged from a disorganized group of amateurs into a professional body sharing a common orientation and common goals. This group of 56, educated both in Europe and America, was surprisingly specialized; 46 were employed as scientists, with the group evenly divided between physical science and natural history. Their interests could not be described as "practical"; on the contrary, most of the leading scientists and most of the 2,225 articles published were theoretical. Primarily this group and their writings defined the normal conduct of science during this era.
