Library JournalThis valuable new addition to the directory literature profiles 18,000 U.S. wholesalers and distributors. Straightforward and easy to use, the volume features an alphabetical listing of wholesalers and distributors, a geographical listing, and an alphabetical listing of Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes and a list of of rankings within SICs by annual estimated sales. Full contact information is given. For example, under ``W.S. Lee & Sons, Inc.,'' an address and phone is listed along with its primary industry: ``Groceries=General line.'' This directory is essential for people working in the field; nothing else this comprehensive exists. Recommended for specialized business collections.-- Peggy Smith, Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park
Zom ZomsAs its straightforward, descriptive title implies, this is a directory of approximately 18,000 companies in the U.S. that act as wholesalers or distributors for a variety of products. Those products belong to 69 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) categories that encompass both consumer goods (e.g., confectionery, furniture, toys) and industrial goods (e.g., construction and mining machinery, industrial supplies, scrap and waste materials) The 18,000 companies are listed alphabetically by company name in the directory section. There each of the unnumbered entries lists, in varying degrees of completeness, address, telephone and fax numbers, "primary" and "additional" SIC numbers, year of establishment, estimated annual sales, number of employees, chief officers, and product line. The elements most likely to be omitted are product line, estimated annual sales, and company officers. The information presented about each company is similar to that given in "Ward's Business Directory", also from Gale. Comparison of the two directories reveals that all but about a third of the companies listed in "American Wholesalers and Distributors Directory" are also listed in "Ward's"; however, in "Ward's" nothing distinguishes them as wholesalers or distributors rather than as, say, manufacturers The directory's geographic index lists the companies by state and by city within each state section. Scaled-down entries in this index list only company name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and primary industry, without that industry's SIC number. The second index, by SIC codes, ranks the companies active within each code by estimated sales, rounded off to the nearest $100,000 This directory, by virtue of its 6,000 or so unique listings, supplements "Ward's" and other business directories. In comprehensive business reference collections, it can help manufacturers identify additional wholesale customers or distributors for their products, just as it can help retailers identify potential new suppliers.
BooknewsA comprehensive guide providing descriptive listings of some 18,000 wholesalers and distributors on national, regional, state, and major local levels. Consumer products of all kinds are covered, regardless of country of origin. Entries are arranged alphabetically by company name, and include address, phone, fax, SIC, principal product lines, total number of employees, estimated annual sales volume, and principal officers. Indexed by geographic region and SIC codes, this new reference should appeal to the varied interests of new product manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors, market researchers, consumers, and job hunters.
