While most zoo visitors focus only on the entertainment factor-walking in parklike settings, viewing animal antics, and perhaps watching staged shows and exhibitions-Nyhuis (The Zoo Book) and animal photographer Wassner make a case for the broader and more important contributions of zoos, including education, environmental research, and breeding programs for captive animals. The authors, who have been visiting zoos worldwide since childhood, have now produced this substantial guide to 60 zoos they consider the best. Written for the general traveler, introductory chapters concisely present background information on the origin of zoos, maximizing the zoo experience, animal viewing and photography tips, and zoo manners, especially for children. Another chapter covers some of the more distinctive animals kept in captivity-e.g., bearded pigs, clouded leopards, and gharials-and the best places to go to see them. The heart of the book lies in the individual zoo reviews, grouped by region. Extensive entries, much more comprehensive than in traditional travel guides, include standard information (hours, admission, and directions) and feature exhibits not to be missed. The appendixes list best zoo exhibits by type (e.g., pachyderm, gorilla), and two comprehensive indexes list zoos by state and subject. Essential for zoo fans; libraries will want circulating and reference copies. Highly recommended.

A Zoopendous Guide for your next Zoocation

Where was this book when I was a kid? Now that I am a parent though, I am just as thankful for it. This book reviews zoos big and small, far and wide, and provides pretty much every relevant piece of information that a zoo-goer could want in preparation for their visit. The majority of the book is broken down into individual reviews of the more noteworthy zoos in each region. Each review includes important information like the zoo website, hours of operation, admission, etc. and then focuses on the "featured exhibits", "for the kids", "edutainment", and "don't miss". At the end of the book are a couple of excellent appendices "The Top 10 US Zoo Exhibits in 20 Categories" and "Each Author's Picks for the Top 25 US Zoo Exhibits". So for example if you or your family loves looking at tigers and other Asian animals you will see that the Bronx Zoo and the Columbus Zoo are the top ranked in this category. Likewise if your local zoo does not feature a particular animal, in my case there are no hippos at the Bronx Zoo, then be sure to check out the Miami Metrozoo, San Diego Zoo, or Denver Zoo (which is what we did) on your next Zoocation. The authors have a great website associated with the book http://www.americasbestzoos.com/ and to top it off you can communicate with them directly via email and expect a fast response. Well organized and full of useful information - a must have for all zoo fans out there.

    Great Book

My niece, mom, daughter and I go to a zoo every summer. This book is perfect for helping us decide which zoo is right for us. There are headings describing the "must see" attractions, restaurants, main attractions, and what is new or soon to be new at the zoo. It gives driving instructions and ticket prices. Extremely informative. A must have if you are a zoo lover.
