School Library Journal - School Library Journal
YA-- A compilation of news articles from the years 1987-1990 that concentrate on American children. A section on child abuse and crime covers the Lisa Steinberg murder case, youth gangs, the Tawana Brawley incident, and more. Issues such as teen pregnancy and surrogate motherhood are found under the heading of the American family. Another chapter is devoted to pros and cons of day care, the infant mortality rate, and food stamps. Articles on the illiteracy rate, the Channel One debuts, and poor test scores are grouped under education. Each section is prefaced with an introduction, followed by the actual news clips. Most are short, but there is a variety of national newspapers. The excellent subject index makes this an easy tool to use. --Pat Royal, Crossland High School, Camp Springs, MD
