Did you know that a century before the Revolutionary War a mother of five ran her own trans-Atlantic trading and shipping business? Or that in the age of slavery, an African-American poet was internationally renowned before she was 21? And that more than a hundred years ago, a strong-minded woman refused to take no for an answer and won the right to argue before the Supreme Coup? America's Daughters tells these and many other stories.

School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-This well-organized book contains two-page biographies of more than 50 women. The biographies are grouped into centuries from the 17th to the 20th. Each section begins with a time line and discussion of "Women's Work" and "Women's Place" that provide historical and social context for the profiles that follow. Some well-known people are included, such as Pocahontas, Phillis Wheatley, and Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as the lesser-known Elizabeth Murray and Maria Martinez. A few of the biographies represent groups of women, e.g., "Hannah Borden & Other Mill Girls" and "Elizabeth Sprigs & Other Indentured Servants." Each section also highlights the role of a particular group, e.g., "Women of the Civil War" and, for the 20th century, "Superwomen." Every page contains at least one good-quality, black-and-white period photograph or reproduction. An interesting look at a cross section of women over the centuries.-Linda W.
