Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jamie Hain
Readers are immersed in the world of the forest as they receive an in depth introduction to the different types of forests found in North and Central America. The first half of the book is divided into six sections, each focusing on a specific type of forest. Sections contain a map showing where that type of forest is located in America, a list of animals commonly found in that type of forest, and a colorful illustration showing the relative geography and location of flora and fauna to water sources and elevation levels. The second half of the book takes a closer look at some of the most commonly found flora and fauna in America's forests, providing readers with more specific information about their appearance, lifestyle, and habitat. In addition to the standard glossary and index, this highly informative book includes a section about animal tracks, an explanation of scientific versus common names, a list of several national parks with good hiking trails divided by forest type, and a page edge ruler for helping readers measure and identify animal tracks or flora they may come across while hiking. This book is part of the "America's Ecosystems" series and would be a great resource for classes focusing on nature or environmental science. Camps and outdoor education centers would also find this highly informative book a good resource for answering questions regarding North America's forests and the flora and fauna that live within them.
