America's Mayor: The Hidden History of Rudy Giuliani's New York

Overview

Rudy Giuliani's admirably flinty response to the horrifying events of 9/11 has made him a national hero, positioning him for big things to come in the nation's political life, as governor of New York, in Hillary Rodham Clinton's coveted US Senate seat or, his ultimate quest, the White House. But the outpouring of praise for his performance after September 11, 2001 has obscured many uncomfortable facts about Giuliani, one of the most polarizing ...

But the outpouring of praise for his performance after September 11, 2001 has obscured many uncomfortable facts about Giuliani, one of the most polarizing figures in the history of a great and frenetic city.

This book collects the original essays and reporting of some of New York's most perceptive authors and reporters on Giuliani's two terms as mayor. The writers have few illusions about Rudy's turbulent reign, offering an informative and entertaining corrective to today's simplistic celebration of "America's Mayor."

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, Rudy Giuliani was the perfect mayor. Stoic, respectful, and forthright, he presented a comforting image of compassion and resilience to a grieving, distraught city. America’s Mayor, a collection of essays written mostly by journalists who covered Giuliani’s eight years in City Hall, takes a hard look at the mayor’s work prior to 9/11. And Giuliani fans, beware: The 18 entries here remind that despite Rudy’s bravura performance, he ranks -- and rankles -- as one of the most controversial and polarizing leaders in Big Apple history. Like the image Giuliani was hell-bent on projecting, America’s Mayor is tough and hard-hitting. Richard Steier, the dean of New York’s labor reporters, notes that Giuliani habitually treated journalists “like mushrooms" -- “keeping them in the dark and feeding them plenty of manure.” That steady diet is finally regurgitated, as reporters dissect Giuliani’s reign. Exhuming his misguided war on squeegee men, a poorly handled public divorce, credit grabs for an anti-Mob strategy that was well in place before he became a U.S. attorney and a crime reduction initiated by his senior police staff, and unabashed patronage appointments, a portrait emerges of a manipulative, politically shrewd Machiavellian. Newsday reporter Robert Polner has done a fine job editing this collection and assembling a legion of noteworthy contributors -- Pulitzer winner Jimmy Breslin, Mob scribe Jerry Capeci, essayist Luc Sante, novelist Kevin Baker, and Timesman Jim Dwyer, to name a few. While some points are hammered on again and again in different essays -- most notably Giuliani's post-9/11 brilliance and his pre-9/11 belligerence -- any redundancies come across, sadly, as the echo of facts piled high. Of course, its subject will dispute these “facts” -- or, given past performances, simply ridicule them -- but the issues raised in America’s Mayor deserve to be on record. This is an important book about an important national figure. Seth Kaufman
