About the Author

Marianne D. Wallace is a natural science illustrator and writer whose work has appeared in over 30 books and publications. She has also been an elementary school science teacher, a botanic garden tour guide, and a writer for the US Forest Service. She lives in the foothills of Southern California.

This book has information on the common plant and animal life of six major mountain areas: the Appalachian Mountains, the northern Rocky Mountains, the southern Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, and the Alaskan Mountains. A one-page map shows where mountains are located in North America. A regional map introduces brief descriptions of each mountain area. Colored illustrations identify the plants and animals found in each area. Sketches of plants and animals common to many mountain regions are provided in a separate section of the book. Descriptions of each plant or animal include its color, its size, and the food it ingests, along with a few paragraphs of general information. A brief glossary and a list of resources are given. While the book "informs nature buffs of all ages about the interwoven facets of mountain ecosystems the overall look of the small book is elementary.
