Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jacki Vawter
The mountain life of North America is the subject of this thorough information that is comprehensive, with concise text and companion graphic representations. Simple section maps illustrate the location of the featured mountains and include scales for both miles and kilometers. Good drawings, both black and white and colored, illustrate the plants and animals to be found in the mountain range under study. Animal tracks 'walk' across the page for common birds and mammals. The first two-thirds of the book describe six mountain groups: the Appalachians, the northern Rockies, the southern Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, and the Alaskan Mountains. The final third offers common plants and animals that are found in more than one mountain region. In this section, the drawings are tight with the text. Boldface names and a simple layout are other reasons the book is attractive in appearance. Interesting facts and good writing make the book readable. We learn that the population of snowshoe hares drops suddenly every ten years, that there are distinct mountain zones from the foothills to the alpine, and mountain goats have a sponge-like surface on the bottom of their feet to help them grip rock surfaces.
From The Critics
This book has information on the common plant and animal life of six major mountain areas: the Appalachian Mountains, the northern Rocky Mountains, the southern Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, and the Alaskan Mountains. A one-page map shows where mountains are located in North America. A regional map introduces brief descriptions of each mountain area. Colored illustrations identify the plants and animals found in each area. Sketches of plants and animals common to many mountain regions are provided in a separate section of the book. Descriptions of each plant or animal include its color, its size, and the food it ingests, along with a few paragraphs of general information. A brief glossary and a list of resources are given. While the book "informs nature buffs of all ages about the interwoven facets of mountain ecosystems the overall look of the small book is elementary. The text, however, is laden with facts and is probably best used as a resource for information. Acceptable, Grades 3-8. REVIEWER: LeRoy Lee (Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters)

Katrina took out a small pouch and whispered into it. A small bud popped out and turned into a deer. She jumped onto the deers horn and it trotted off.
