Overview

Moving from the cascading waters of Niagara Falls to the massive volcanoes of Hawaii, renowned nature photographer Philippe Bourseiller takes readers on a captivating visual journey through 67 of the most magnificent natural sites in North America. The product of an entire year spent coursing the length and breadth of the United States, America's Parks captures the amazing diversity and ecological richness of some of our most important natural wildlife areas.

Bourseiller's free-ranging camera captures more than 200 breathtaking aerial and terrestrial images of wild America, from Mount St. Helens to the ice fields of Alaska, while essays from three prominent environmental journalists place the sites in historical, scientific, and sociological context. The result is a sumptuous panorama of unrivalled beauty that argues eloquently for environmental protection.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
America's national parks are the focus of this outstanding photography collection by five-time World Press Prize winner Bourseiller (365 Ways To Save the Earth). The book is made up almost entirely of color images, the majority of which are two-page spreads. The visual presentation conveys the beauty, vastness, glory, harshness, and intrigue that can be found in 54 of our country's parks. Bourseiller has captured more than traditional picture-postcard images-e.g., one shot focuses on the bottom of an uprooted tree, and another features a vertical rock face in a Wyoming park. The captions are in a separate section at the back, which allows for an unobstructed view of the photographs, but readers must flip back and forth to identify what they are viewing. Three essays by nature and environmental writers discuss the history and politics of U.S. national parks; one essay compares our parks to those in other regions such as Africa, Europe, and Latin America. This volume is designed for browsing in the library or for home collections; its weight would deter users from signing it out and carrying it home. Truly a work of art but an optional purchase for libraries, depending on need and interest.-Deborah Emerson, Rochester Regional Lib. Council, Fairport, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    STUNNING

What a stunning collection of photographs from some of America's most beautiful parks! This is the kind of coffee table book you will want to linger over time and time again. It would make a fantastic gift but I loved it so much I had to keep it. At the end of a long, hard day, it brings me great joy each time I turn a page.
