Overview

Within six weeks of 9/11, in a nation gripped by fear and hatred, Congress overwhelmingly approved the USA PATRIOT Act, drafted in secret by the Department of Justice. There was almost no debate, and few in Congress were given more than a few hours to read the 342-page document. In America's Unpatriotic Acts, journalist and university professor Walter M. Brasch looks not just at the effects of the PATRIOT Act upon the nation, but also at the innumerable civil rights violations conducted in the United States, as well as by the United States in foreign countries during the three years following 9/11.

America's Unpatriotic Acts the Federal Government's Violation of Constitutional and Civil Rights

Without question, this book digs into the lies of the Bush Administration and cites fact after fact about what is happening to our civil liberties. The author uses many sources, and verifies all of them. In the name of freedom, this administration has lied to us and has through its distrust of the democratic process began a systematic whittling away of the Constituional Rights. The author (Walter Brasch) doesn't rant, he just tells us what is happening and how these actions violate our Constitutional Rights. What I found surprising is that many of the people opposing the PATRIOT Act are dyed-in-the-wool conservatives (Newt Gingrich, Bob Barr, and many others.) Frightening, to me at least, was how much there has been suppression of the constitutional right of dissent.

America's Unpatriotic Acts the Federal Government's Violation of Constitutional and Civil Rights

I couldn't believe how much of our civil liberties have been torn apart during the past four years. But, Walter Brasch has carefully documented what has happened in the name of fighting terror. The truth is that the administration has used terrorism to terror not the enemy but us--but suppresing our First Amendment rights. This, I knew. But, I also didn't realize that the PATRIOT Act also violated other amendments as well. He really documents this. And, he also documents how America is perceived overseas by its actions against prisoners, and how this also violates our own Constitution. This is a fast-paced book that is extremely well-written. And, it's very well documented. He quotes conservatives and liberals, politicians and soldiers. The book almost reads like a novel. But, it's so well documented.
