Amethyst Rock Star [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Star of the 1998 indie film Slam, spoken-word poet Saul Williams makes his recording debut with Amethyst Rock Star -- a kaleidoscopic fusion of Jimi Hendrix-fueled rock, old-school-inspired hip-hop, and politically-charged, Gil Scott-Heron-styled poetry. While he musically challenges his audience with an orchestral shower of violin, electric guitar, cello, drum-'n'-bass rhythms, and hip-hop break-beats, Williams invites listeners to think beyond the materialistic, bling-bling of rap's status quo ("Penny for a Thought") and to embrace their inner soul revolutionary ("Fearless"). Armed with intelligence and creativity, on Amethyst Rock Star, Williams proves himself to...

Saul Williams is a lyrical poet

It's not quite hip-hop and it's not quite poetry. The lyrics are very conscientious and i'm pretty sure that he's backed by a live band. I was really excited about this CD and then I went to see K-Pax only to find him with a staring role, and he was really good, and i loved the movie. But back to the CD, it's very innovative and original, this disc will be a milestone for conscience rap.

    Exciting

Saul Williams & his crew make for exciting listening. You'll have to listen to it alone for about the 3rd time to get the true feeling. The word and music blend for excitment and pleasure.

Where have you been all my life?

With his first book, ''The Seventh Octave'' many people could tell, this poet could be and hopefully would be a spoken word force that carried a good deal of weight in these times. And he has, now in three movies starting with SLAM, SlamNation, and now K-Pax with Kevin Spacey and another book entitled She and the anticipated release of his first individual music endeavor. He leads me to believe that he is this force, and whether or not he destroys the coastline of our dead language, he will surely have us wish for storm.
