Purpose: The purpose is to help the reader understand some of the more important information on how protein and amino acids can have a positive impact on athletic performance, health, disease, and longevity. This is a timely subject because of the recent increased interest in determining the ergogenic effect of specific amino acids. The author achieved some of his objectives through a review of energy and protein metabolism and a discussion of the effects of individual amino acids on performance. However, he fell short of providing enough conclusive evidence that amino acids, with the exception of creatine, provide any improvement in athletic performance.
Audience: This book is written for the student, resident, or practitioner interested in the nutritional aspects of exercise and sports. The author is a credible authority on the topic with both professional and personal experience.
Features: The book contains occasional simple illustrations and would benefit from more to help explain some of the concepts described. The references are current but conclusions are drawn from some references that may not be pertinent to athletes. The book is well organized.
Assessment: It provides a thorough review of protein and amino acid metabolism as well as their effects on athletic performance. Students, residents, and practitioners with limited experience in sports medicine would find this book useful. I would not recommend it to experienced sports medicine practitioners, because it offers very little new information.
