Amish Proverbs: Words of Wisdom from the Simple Life

Beautiful book of wisdom

I love Suzanne's book Amish Peace and was excited to read Amish Proverbs. This book is a beautiful work of art that would make a great gift. It is full of gorgeous photos of Amish country and many sites and things you would see there. Then it is filled with words of wisdom, a couple of my favorites...

"You can't stumble when you are on your knees."

"Nothing is quite so annoying as to have someone go right on talking when you are interrupting."

"Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines."

A wonderful book that would be great for just reading a page or two at a time and spending the rest of the day mulling over the words of wisdom.

Beautiful photos and classic wisdom make for terrific gift book

Amish Proverbs by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a terrific hardcover gift book. The Amish have tons of proverbs that cover nearly every aspect of their lives, and Fisher has put them together along with beautiful photographs and profiles of some Amish people that exemplify the words of wisdom. Her book perfectly captures the spirit of the Plain People and the simplicity of their lives that are so rich with wisdom. The reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory. If you think you're too small to make a difference, you haven't been in bed with a mosquito. Bibles that are coming apart usually belong to people who aren't. Readers will find themselves wanting to share the sayings and nodding their heads at the truisms. It's a book that you'll want to keep on your shelf to reread again and again.

A Sweet Book of Proverbs

This little book is a treasure that I will definitely read again. It is filled with words of wisdom that everyone can relate to. Here are some of my favorites from the book:

* Faith is the bridge over which we can cross all the unknown waters of tomorrow.
* Our children are the only treasures we can take to heaven.
* Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you can.


Amish Proverbs is divided into several sections including Time, Money, Faith, Children & Family, In Word & Deed, Work Ethic, Handling Adversity, Education, Community, and Just for Fun. Each section includes a few pages of relevant stories, history or insights into the Amish way of life.

I especially enjoyed the Just for Fun section. We might think that the Amish are too serious about life to have a sense of humour, but this little book proves otherwise. How about these?

* Every family tree has a little sap.
* Kissing wears out, cooking don't.
* Nothing is quite so annoying as to have someone go right on talking when you are interrupting.

I highly recommend this book, and it would make a great gift or addition to any library. It is filled with great wisdom, truth, and humor. There are beautiful photos throughout the book as well, and the reader will definitely gain a new appreciation for the "Simple Life".

Suzanne Woods Fisher in her new book, "Amish Proverbs" words of wisdom from the simple life published by Revell gives us wisdom that we don't hear much anymore. With beautiful photographs the proverbs are separated by "Time", "Money", "Faith", "Children & Family", "In Word & Deed", "Work Ethic", "Handling Adversity", "Education", "Community", "Character" and "Just For Fun".

Spend enough time with the Amish, as author Suzanne Woods Fisher has, and you'll hear them repeat a catchy turn of phrase or short words of wisdom, like "Good character like good soup is usually homemade," or "Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience." Suspended in these phrases are age-old lessons about how to live wisely and please God. Reiterated day after day, the proverbs are learned by heart and help guide the lives of the Amish, reminding them of what's truly important.

Inspiring - and telling

I hadn't heard of many of these sayings, so this was fun to read. It was interesting to read both the sayings, or proverbs, and the meanings behind them. I've always been fascinated by the Amish way of life, so being able to get a more detailed picture of what these things mean, some lessons that other people have learned from their dealings with the Amish, and just being taught something new, has me picking up this book time and time again.

This isn't the type of book you read from cover to cover. You can literally pick up the book, open it to a random page, and begin reading. It's a book I've had on my nightstand for several weeks now.
My Family "Proverbs" or Traditions

I don't know that we have that many. Since we've been in South Carolina, we've spent the last 2 Mother's Day holidays picking strawberries. We've had fun so far, so maybe that will become a tradition. We did pic strawberries in Ohio prior to coming down here, but I don't remember if that was on Mother's Day.

The only "proverb" that I can think of, and I use the term very loosely, is that my dad - always - when he hears something he doesn't want to hear says "Don't let your mouth overload your ass". LOL! I think he's trying to say don't speak unless you're prepared to back it up, but really, no one pays him any attention. We're used to it!
