Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-9These series entries inform readers about the workings of important organizations and may inspire career choices. In Amnesty International, students will learn about the places in the world where human rights abuses are rampant and what effect such organizations can bring to bear on the perpetrators. Some of the descriptions and illustrations depicting torture may upset young readers. However, the process of documenting human-rights abuses, using up-to-date technology, is interesting. Pollard's and Trier's titles portray the various agencies within the UN and their roles as watchdog, caretaker, banker, adviser, and teacher. The pages are attractively laid out and illustrated with a combination of black-and-white and full-color photographs, newspaper and poster illustrations, and drawings made by children and prisoners. The books are well organized, but there are no tables of contents or bibliographies. Each volume is supplemented with a wide array of relevant quotations suitable for discussion.Nancy E. Zuwiyya, Binghamton High School, NY
