Amos Ahoy: A Couch Adventure on Land and Sea

Amos Ahoy: A Couch Adventure on Land and Sea

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
In his latest adventure, that lovable old Irish setter, Amos, revs up his couch and sets off on one of his regular outings only to collide accidentally with Chops, the neighborhood bully. A madcap chase ensues with the dog, the dog catcher, a used-furniture man, and a police officer all getting into the act, racing in hot pursuit of the souped-up sofa. Amos narrowly escapes onto a ferryboat that is then tossed about in a storm, only to be unwittingly hailed as a hero when he uses his couch to rescue a small boy, also named Amos. The subtlety and understated humor of the original story, Amos: The Story of an Old Dog and His Couch (Little, 1987), here gives way to slapstick and a breakneck pace that is enough to give anyone motion sickness. Even Schneider's watercolor cartoons seem overly busy and excessively punctuated with sound effects and expletives: ``CRASH!,'' ``BLAM!,'' ``SPLAT!'' Amos fans will be delighted to have a new couch adventure, but they won't dash to the shelves for this one more than once. --Luann Toth, School Library Journal
