Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There is a lot of information packed into this early reader both in the text and the excellent photographs. The "True of False" science series from Scholastic is set up so that a question is posed and readers are expected to respond either true or false and then turn the page to see if they are correct. The information answering the question is clear and illustrated with a photograph. Additional information is found in smaller insets on the page. To illustrate—a toad is shown with a big air sac and the question is posed as a statement: "All frogs and toads call and croak." Turning the page reveals the answer—mostly male frogs and toads call and croak and this usually occurs during mating season. The illustration shows a bull frog ready to make its sound and the inset describes what that sound is like. After reading this book, kids will know the difference between toads and frogs and also learn about a few other members of the amphibian family such as the salamander, newts, mudpuppies and the caecilians. The sad news is that nearly one third of all amphibians are endangered and there is a need to protect them and maintain the balance of nature. Yes, people can make a difference. There is an extensive index to help kids easily find information. While this is an early reader it could be used in and ESOL program or with older students who are not reading on grade level.
