Amy Namey wants to be a reporter, just like her mom. She knows she needs to find an exciting story to write about. She is trying to do just that when Judy Moody comes along to help her. Mrs. Namey teaches Amy and Judy that the biggest story in a paper is the one called “Above the Fold” and it is printed at the top of the page. It is then that Amy decides she needs a mega-exciting story to be printed at the top of the page on her paper. The quest for a super-exciting story starts in Judy’s backyard; then Amy and Judy go to Frog Neck Creek, where the girls spot something in the stream that is so terrifying that they go scrambling breathlessly back to Amy’s backyard. Luckily, they were able to snap a photo just before they ran away; and although Amy’s mom wonders whether or not their photo of this monster could possibly be a three-humped tree branch, the girls are absolutely convinced they have a story and photo exciting enough to be “above the fold” in the next newspaper. Young readers will delight in this fun, fast-paced story about two determined, clever, curious, and creative girls in their hunt for the perfect story. The colorful, detailed illustrations on every page add greatly to the content, enjoyment, and understanding of the text. The illustrations, especially the expressive faces of Amy, Judy, Mrs. Namey, and Stink, are engaging and very helpful in grasping each character’s personality, intent, and mood. The text is age-appropriate and rich with detail that will stimulate the mind and enrich the thinking of young readers. For example, when Amy digs up a marble and rubs off the dirt, she considers whether or not it could be a marble that was buried with king Tut, the boy King. When she decides to hunt for the sea monster, she thinks of all the other sea monsters that she has heard of; and, by way of her inner conversations, young readers learn about Nessie from Scotland and Nyami-Nyami from Africa. Any and all young readers who are beginning to enjoy chapter books and the pleasures of reading independently will relish this delightful and whimsical story about Amy Namey and her ace reporting skills. Reviewer: Susan Borges; Ages 6 to 9.
