Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kirsten Shaw
Author Amy Tan's novels have been bestsellers, made into movies, operas, and plays, and her short stories have been published in numerous magazines. Mussari reveals the hardships Tan's mother faced as a woman in China and as a Chinese immigrant and the effect she had on her daughter's writing. Tan uses the unique relationship she had with her mother as a backdrop for many of her stories including The Joy Luck Club, as well as the injustices her mother experienced as a woman in Chinese society in The Kitchen God's Wife. When Tan's mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's she mined her family's experiences for the novel The Bonesetter's Daughter. Students will know Tan as the author of the popular children's book Sagwa the Chinese Cat. Mussari also touches on aspects of Tan's personal life including her battle with Lyme disease and her involvement in a rock band with fellow writers Stephen King and Dave Barry. A synopsis of each of her novels is included along with a chronology of her life and works. Reviewer: Kirsten Shaw
VOYA - Meghann Meeusen
This series of five books explores the lives and works of major contemporary writers, including Isabel Allende, Bill Bryson, Amy Tan, Haruki Murakami and Stephen King. Stephen King chronicles the author's childhood and family, from his beginnings as an avid reader and writer working odd jobs to his difficulty with addiction and finally, the whirlwind of success and challenges he faced in becoming one of the most recognizable names in fiction. Emphasizing King's ability to write meaningful and literary stories capable of reaching a wide audience, the text paints him as, not only a master of horror, but a regional writer who expertly navigates a variety of genres. Focusing on his works and their context, the volume includes detailed descriptions of Carrie, The Green Mile and several of King's short stories. A similar balance of literary explication and biography can be found in Amy Tan, which begins by describing two strong influences on her writing: her mother's beliefs in the supernatural, and profound personal tragedy. The text explores Tan's unique voice and style, describing her ability to offer a bicultural perspective and address especially the concerns of Asian American women. The volume also mentions Tan's children's novels and nonfiction, as well as how her works have flourished on stage and screen, paying particular critical attention to The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter's Daughter. Expertly organized with headings and including vivid photographs, this series melds background with in-depth information about the authors' important texts to offer accessible and interesting accounts. Volumes humanize the writers by providing details of their families and pasts, considering not only major influences and successes, but also adaptations of their works into other mediums. The plethora of supplemental materials and useful literary analysis make these excellent classroom resources that will encourage readers to seek out further titles by popular and important writers.
