This context is verbally fleshed out in pianist Graham Johnson's extensive and accessible liner notes. The styles of these selections are astonishingly varied and will, without doubt, expand the listener's idea of this composer. The three Italian songs sung with tragicomic relish by baritone Gerald Finley stand at the greatest remove from the delightful and typically Schubertian "Die Sterne" given an affecting performance by Juliane Banse. Atypically Schubertian in the extreme, the wonderfully entertaining comic trio "Die Hochzeitsbraten" -- a scene about the travails of finding a beef roast for a wedding feast -- enjoys a spirited performance by Finley, soprano Lynne Dawson, and tenor Michael Schade. A high point of this recording is the unsettling sailor's song "Schiffers Scheidelied," a physically taxing piece for pianist and singer alike that sounds like a grown-up "Erlkönig," whose technical difficulty it far exceeds. Capable of both hefty chest sounds and softly floating tones, Finley's voice is marvelously suited to this repertory. Similarly, the bright, ringing tone of Schade's tenor lends "Wolke und Quelle" and "Fröhlisches Scheiden" idiomatic verve and grace. Completed by others after Schubert's death, these two songs stand as a poignant reminder of all Schubert left incomplete and unwritten when he died the following year at the age of 31.

As Graham Johnson nears the completion of his heroic task of recording all of the Schubert songs and ensembles with piano accompaniment, it is with joy, at hearing some lovely new gems, and sadness, that only one volume remains unissued, that we greet this new issue. The songs range from the excellent "Der Kreuzzug" to some rather forgettable songs which will probably remain forgotten by most listeners. The performances range from very fine in the case of Gerald Finley and Juliane Banse to good, but not his best, from "Michael Schade." Finley is especially interesting in the three Italian songs, where his Italian enunciation is as fine as his German is elsewhere on the disc. His performance of "Der Kreuzzug" may be placed next to Hotter and Fischer-Dieskau, as high praise as it is possible to give in case of this song. Banse is very effective in "Heimliches Lieben" and "Die Sterne," but she does not erase the memory of some earlier recordings of these songs. Most of the other songs on the disc are rather lightweight but enjoyable examples of later Schubert song composition. For many the highlight of the disc will be the trio "Der Hochzeitsbraten." This 11-minute trio is one of Schubert's few truly humorous pieces and is very well sung by Lynne Dawson, Schade, and Finley. This is Dawson's only appearance on this disc and she makes the most of the opportunity. As usual with this series, the program notes by Johnson and the texts with excellent translations by Richard Wigmore are worth the cost of the disc. Johnson's insights into Schubert as a song copmposer are underscored in both his playing and his writing. On to the final volume and "Schwanengesang"!
